Indications

Trimazole Topical Solution is used for: Skin and nail fungal infections, Tinea pedis, Tinea cruris, Tinea corporis, Cutaneous Candidiasis, Dermatophytosis, Pityriasis versicolor

Adult Dose

Topical/Cutaneous Skin and nail fungal infections: Adult: Apply 2 or 3 times daily. Onychomycosis: Apply to the affected area twice daily for 6 months. Tinea pedis & Dermatomycoses: Apply to the affected area twice daily for 4 weeks.

Child Dose

Tinea Corporis/Tinea Pedis Apply to the affected area twice daily for 4 weeks Tinea Cruris >2 years: Apply to the affected area twice daily for 2 weeks Candidiasis Gently massage sufficient clotrimazole into the affected and surrounding area twice daily; reconsider diagnosis if no improvement after 4 weeks Tinea Versicolor Gently massage sufficient clotrimazole into the affected and surrounding area twice daily; reconsider diagnosis if no improvement after 4 weeks

Precautions

Avoid contact with eyes Some dosage forms contain benzyl alcohol; large amounts of benzyl alcohol have been associated with gasping syndrome (potentially fatal) in neonates Not for use by patients who have never had a vaginal infection diagnosed by a doctor Not for use with tampons, douches, spermicides, or other vaginal products Condoms and diaphragms may damage and fail to prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease Not for use when having vaginal intercourse May cause mild increase in vaginal burning, itching or irritation Patient should ask doctor if symptoms do not get better in 3 days, symptoms last more than 7 days, or experience rash, abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or a foul smelling vagina discharge

Pregnancy-Lactation

Pregnancy Small amounts of imidazoles may be absorbed systemically following topical and vaginal administration Lactation Excretion in milk unknown; use with caution

Interactions

Antagonism with polyene antibiotics.

Mechanism of Action

Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal which binds to phospholipids in the cell membrane altering cell wall permeability causing a loss in essential intracellular elements.
