Indications

Vasoactin Injection is used for: Attention deficit disorder, Ischemic stroke, Glaucoma, Amblyopia, Parkinson's disease, Cerebrovascular disorders, Alzheimer's Disease, Cerebral insufficiency (e.g. dizziness, memory loss, poor concentration & disorientation) due to head trauma or brain injury.

Adult Dose

Oral Immediate treatment of stroke due to a clot (ischemic stroke): 500-2000 mg of Citicoline per day, start within 24 hours of stroke. For decline in thinking skills due to stroke: 1000-2000 mg of Citicoline per day. Chronic cerebrovascular disease: 1000 mg daily in divided dose with or between meals for ongoing disease of the blood vessels that serve the brain. For glaucoma:1000mg per day. Head injury; Cerebrovascular disorders; Parkinsonism Adult: 200-600 mg daily in divided doses. Parenteral Disturbance of consciousness due to head injury or brain surgery: 100-500 mg, 1-2 times daily by iv drip infusion/ iv injection. Psychological or neurologic disorder: Disturbance of consciousness in the acute stage of cerebral infraction: 1000 mg once a day by IV injection for 2 consecutive weeks. Hemiplegia after cerebral apoplexy: 1000 mg IV once a day for 4 consecutive weeks & if a trend towards improvement is observed, continue the administration for an additional 4 weeks. Dosage may be adjusted based on the seriousness of the disease. It can be administered Intramuscularly, intravenously (3 to 5 minute) injection and in intravenous drop perfusion (dripping speed 40-60 drops/minute). Citicol is compatible with all intravenous isotonic solutions. It can also be mixed with hypertonic glucose serum. Head injury; Cerebrovascular disorders; Parkinsonism Adult: Up to 1 g IM/IV daily.

May be taken with or without food. Take w/ or between meals.

Contra Indications

Known hypersensitivity. Must not be administered to patients with hypertonic of the parasympathetic.

Precautions

Not enough is known about the use of citicoline during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Pregnancy-Lactation

There is inadequate evidence of safe use of citicoline in human pregnancy. Citicoline should be used in pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks.

Interactions

Citicoline potentiates the effects of L-dopa. Citicoline must not be used with medicines containing Mecloophenoxate or (Centrophenoxine).

Adverse Effects

Side effects of Citicoline : Citicoline seems to be safe when taken short-term (up to 90 days). The safety of long-term use is not known. The most common side effects associated with using Citicoline are: headache, irregular heartbeat, diarrhea, low blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadness, vomiting, nausea. The severe side effects which are very rare include: tightening of the chest, closing of the throat, severe skin rash, hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat and mouth.

Mechanism of Action

Citicoline increases blood flow and O2 consumption in the brain. It is also involved in the biosynthesis of lecithin. Citicoline activates the bio‐synthesis of structural phospholipids in the neuronal membrane, increases cerebral metabolism and increases the level of various neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine and dopamine. Citicoline has shown neuro‐protective effects in situations of hypoxia and ischaemia, as well as improved learning and memory performance in animal models for the brain aging. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that Citicoline restores the activity the activity of mitochondrial ATPase and of membranal Na+/K+ATPase, inhibits the activation of phospholipase A2 and accelerates the re‐absorption of cerebral edema in various experimental models.
