Solodex IV Infusion is used for:
Dehydration, Fluid and Electrolytes Imbalance
Adult Dose
Adult:
IV Dose depends on age, wt and clinical condition of the patient.
Child Dose
IV Dose depends on age, wt and clinical condition of the patient.

Administration
Contra Indications
These solutions are contraindicated where the administration of sodium or chloride could be clinically detrimental.
Solutions containing dextrose may be contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to corn products.
Precautions
May cause fluid and/or solute overload.
Not to be administered concurrently with blood through the same infusion set due to risk of agglomeration.
Patients with overt or known subclinical DM, or carbohydrate intolerance.
Paediatric patients especially neonates and very low birth weight infants.
Caution when used in patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotropin.
Caution when used, in patients with congestive heart failure, severe renal insufficiency, and in clinical states in which there is sodium retention with edema.
In patients with diminished renal function, administration of solutions containing sodium ions may result in sodium retention.
Infusion of isotonic (0.9%) sodium chloride during or immediately after surgery may result in excessive sodium retention. Use the patient’s circulatory system status as a guide.
Excessive administration of potassium-free dextrose solutions may result in significant hypokalemia.
Serum potassium levels should be maintained and potassium supplemented as required.

Adverse Effects
Side effects of Dextrose 5% + Sodium Chloride 0.9% :
Fever, infection at the site of inj, venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the site of inj, extravasation and hypervolaemia.
Mechanism of Action
Dextrose and sodium chloride solutions are used as sources of electrolytes, calories and water for hydration. Sodium and chloride ions are responsible for regulating the acid-base balance of the body. Dextrose is a source of calories. It is readily metabolised and helps to decrease losses of body protein and nitrogen. It also promotes glycogen deposition and decreases or prevents ketosis.
