Mechanism of Action
Ramosetron Hydrochloride (oral) is a selective serotonin 5-HT₃ receptor antagonist that works by inhibiting the action of serotonin on 5-HT₃ receptors located in the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system.
In conditions like irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), it reduces abnormal gastrointestinal motility, secretion, and visceral pain by blocking 5-HT₃ receptors in the enteric nervous system.
This action helps normalize bowel movements and reduce urgency. Ramosetron also prevents nausea and vomiting by blocking serotonin-induced stimulation of vagal afferents in the gut and the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ).
