Indications

Mydripine Eye Drops is used for: Keratitis, iritis, cyclitis, & refractive procedure in children. Mydriatic & cycloplegic. Childhood myopia

Adult Dose

Ophthalmic Inflammatory eye disorders Adult: Instill 1-2 drops of a 1% solution up to 4 times daily. Ointment: as required. Eye refraction Adult: Instill 1 drop of a 1% solution bid for 1-2 days before the procedure, or on a single occasion 1 hr before the procedure.

Child Dose

Ophthalmic Child > 3 months Inflammatory eye disorders Child: As 1% solution: Instill 1 drop of a 1% solution up to tid. Ointment: as required. Slows the progression of childhood myopia Child: As 0.01% solution: Instill 1 drop once daily on the affected eye. Generally, the treatment is recommended for a minimum of two years. However, it can be continued up to the age of 12 or until the child's eye growth stabilizes. Eye refraction Child: As 0.5% - 1% solution: Instill 1 or 2 drops of a 0.5% soln (or 1 drop of a 1% solution) bid for 1-3 days before the procedure, with a further dose given 1 hr before the procedure.

Contra Indications

Hypersensitivity or known allergic reaction to any ingredient of the formulation Narrow-angle glaucoma.

Precautions

Photophobia and blurred vision due to pupil unresponsiveness and cycloplegia may last up to 2 weeks. The risk of blood pressure increases from systemic absorption. Increased adverse drug reaction susceptibility with certain central nervous system conditions.

Pregnancy-Lactation

Pregnancy There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women to inform a drug-associated risk; adequate animal development and reproduction studies have not been conducted with atropine sulfate; in humans, 1% atropine sulfate is systemically bioavailable following topical ocular administration; the drug should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus Lactation There is no information to inform risk regarding presence of drug in human milk following ocular administrations of the drug to the mother; effects on breastfed infants and effects on milk production are also unknown Developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother’s clinical need for the drug and any potential adverse effects on breastfed child from the drug

Interactions

Additive anticholinergic effects with quinidine, antidepressants and some antihistamines. The use of atropine and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) is generally not recommended because of the potential to precipitate hypertensive crisis.

Mechanism of Action

Blocks the action of acetylcholine resulting in relaxation of the cholinergically innervated sphincter muscle of the iris Cholinergic stimulation of the accommodative ciliary muscle of the lens is also blocked Anticholinergic effects of atropine sulfate in the eye produce dilation of the pupil (mydriasis) and paralysis of accommodation (cycloplegia)
