Indications
Dexotix M Syrup is used for:
Nonproductive cough with chest congestion
Adult Dose
Adult:
10mL every 4 hours;
Max 6 doses/24 hours.

Contra Indications
Children <12yrs old.
During or within 14 days of MAOIs.
contraindicated in documented hypersensitivity to either drug or components
Not for persistent cough associated with chronic bronchitis, smoking, asthma, or accompanied with excessive secretions
Precautions
Do not use
for children under 12 years of age
if you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Dextromethorphan
Do not take for persistent or chronic cough associated with smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or if it is accompanied by excessive phlegm unless directed by a healthcare provider; may slow respiration rate
Hallucinations, confusion, agitation, hyper-reflexia, shivering, myoclonus, and tachycardia may occur
Caution in children younger than 6 years
Not for OTC use in children <4 years
Use caution in patients who are sedated, debilitated or confined to supine position
Guaifenesin
Guaifenesin is not for administration in persistent cough associated with chronic bronchitis, smoking, asthma, or accompanied with excessive secretions
Pregnancy-Lactation
Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide-guaifenesin have been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA.
There are no controlled data on this combination product in human pregnancy. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide-guaifenesin is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
There are no data on the excretion of dextromethorphan-guaifenesin into human milk. In nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue. There are no human studies on the use of menthol during pregnancy; thus, its risk is undetermined.
Interactions
Possible reactions systemically may occur with acetaminophen / hydrocodone, diphenhydramine, escitalopram, acetaminophen / codeine, alprazolam and ondansetron.
Adverse Effects
Side effects of Dextromethorphan + Guaiphenesin + Menthol :
GI upset; rare: drowsiness, headache, rash.
Mechanism of Action
Guaifenesin is an expectorant which works by decreasing the stickiness of airway secretions and helps in their removal from the airways. It helps loosen congestion in the chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through the mouth.
Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.
Menthol is an organic compound made synthetically or obtained from corn mint, peppermint, or other mint oils. It has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities, and it is widely used to relieve minor throat irritation.
