Indications

Civox E/E Drops is used for: Otitis media, Superficial ophthalmic infections, Otitis externa, Bacterial Conjunctivitis, Corneal Ulcers (Keratitis)

Adult Dose

Bacterial Conjunctivitis Solution/Eye drop: 1-2 drops instilled into conjunctival sac(s) every two hours with the patient awake on days 1-2, then 1-2 drops every four hours with the patient awake on days 3-7 Eye Ointment: 0.5-in. (1.25-cm) ribbon applied into conjunctival sac every eight hours on days 1-2, then 0.5-in. (1.25-cm) ribbon every twelve hours on days 3-7 Corneal Ulcers (Keratitis) Solution/Eye drop: 2 drops every 15 minutes for 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of day 1, then 2 drops every one hour on day 2, and finally 2 drops every four hours on days 3-14 Ointment: Not indicated for keratitis

Child Dose

Bacterial Conjunctivitis <1 year: Safety and efficacy not established >1 year (solution): 1-2 drops instilled into conjunctival sac(s) every two hours with the patient awake on days 1-2, then 1-2 drops every four hours with the patient awake on days 3-7 >2 years (ointment): 0.5-in. (1.25-cm) ribbon applied into conjunctival sac every eight hours on days 1-2, then 0.5-in. (1.25-cm) ribbon every twelve hours on days 3-7

Contra Indications

Ciprofloxacin is contraindicated in patients who have hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones. Resistance to ciprofloxacin

Precautions

Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions, some following the first dose, were reported; some reactions were accompanied by cardiovascular collapse, loss of consciousness, tingling, pharyngeal or facial edema, dyspnea, urticaria, and itching May result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi; if superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be initiated Prolonged use of Ciprofloxacin may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Ciprofloxacin should be discontinued at the first appearance of a skin rash or any other sign of hypersensitivity reaction. Careful monitoring, including slit-lamp microscopy and fluorescein staining when appropriate, may be necessary in some patients receiving ophthalmic ciprofloxacin therapy Discontinue therapy at the first appearance of a skin rash or any other sign of hypersensitivity reaction Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, as this may contaminate the solution Contact lenses should be removed before administration

Interactions

Specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted with ophthalmic ciprofloxacin.

Mechanism of Action

Ciprofloxacin promotes breakage of double-stranded DNA in susceptible organisms and inhibits DNA gyrase, which is essential in reproduction of bacterial DNA.
